"A little more than kin and less than kind"

Act I Scene II:
Hamlet describes his relationship with his uncle as "A little more than kin and less than kind." Hamlet and Claudius are "A little more than kin" because rather than being just an uncle, Claudius is now his step-father.  He describes Claudius as "less than kind" because he knows Claudius MURDERED his father by poisoning his drink to inherit the throne. The tension Hamlet feels toward his uncle makes me wonder what will happen to the relationship between Hamlet and Gertrude. Who's side will she take??? (Also, The Lion King is based on this story which makes me really excited to read it!)

  1. "less than kind" When Hamlet says this he means that they are not related by blood and he is less than kind because he has hastily married his brother's widow. At this point in the play Hamlet does not know that Claudius has murdered his father

    1. Also, Claudius did not poison his brother's drink but poured poison in his ear.

  2. and also at this point in the play, hamlet does not know that his father was murdered by claudius. horatio has yet to tell him abut the ghost, he has yet to see the ghost, AND the ghost has yet to tell him what actually happened.
